To address the needs and empower Latina entrepreneurs across the country, LATINA Style Magazine hosts a Business Series in various cities thorough the year. The one-day business program honors a local entrepreneur of the year and presents panel sessions, experts and resources. A Massage for 3 Please!

As many other salon and spa owners will probably relate to, I prefer to get massages at other salon and spa’s because I can truly relax there rather then thinking about work the entire time. Don’t get my wrong, I really do think that we have some of the top massage therapists in the city, and I have experienced amazing massage sessions with each of them, but there is something about escaping to a new oasis that makes it more relaxing for me. If you do get time, try one of Aniko Salon and Spa’s massage therapists, Grace, Candace, Silvia and Ruby, they are all phenomenal and each have unique massage styles.

So the adventure began, I decided to take a Saturday off and enjoy a spa day with my family so I began to call. I goggled top spas in Chicago 60654 and 60605, and a several search results appeared. Tirra Salon & Spa, Michael Anthony SalonSpa, Daniela’s Day Spa, Kaya Day Spa, Ruby Room, Exhale Spa and Allyu Spa.

I began by calling Tirra Salon & Spa, I have heard great things about them, they have a fabulous reputation in the city and I was hoping to experience their salon and spa, unfortunately, they had nothing available. In fact, as I recall last year I called on a Saturday to get a massage with my father, and they had nothing open that time either, I guess I’ll never get to try them out.

Then Michael Anthony SalonSpa, I have been here before for a massage and a manicure it’s convenient to my condo, but of course I heard once again we have nothing available, maybe try one of our other locations.

So onto Daniela’s Day Spa, apparently day spa can be used for places that don’t even offer massages? I’m sorry but that’s not a day spa?

Kaya Day Spa was my next attempt on my search for three massages together and I have heard about this place many times, so I thought it would be perfect and guess what…no openings today.

Let’s try the Ruby Room, I have actually admired this place every since I opened my place, there website is gorgeous, and their reviews have always been fantastic. Now this was my fifth attempt to find three massages, and yet again I was let down, I asked do you have anything open today and she said, “I do not”. I even asked her, “do you have anything tomorrow”, and she said, “I do not”. So there was nothing available on Saturday and nothing on Sunday…maybe next time.

The common, thing I found was that none of the places listed above even offered me any other services that I could possibly try. Maybe a relaxing facial that includes a shoulder massage, that would have been appealing, or a spa pedicure, anything really, options would have been nice. The point was that we really just wanted to relax. I know from my own experience that Saturday’s and Sunday’s tend to be the busiest days for salon and spa’s but it made me realize that so many people are last minute in the city and that we really should make sure we have openings for people like myself. It’s a great lesson learned.

I was kind of giving-up at this point, and decided maybe I’ll just head over to my own place and get a massage. But I decided try one more place because I thought to myself, “Marti you really deserve a break and going into work is just going to mean your going to work.” So I kept on going…

I was pleasantly surprised when I called Exhale Spa. The gentlemen who answered the phone was very helpful and they did have 3 massage appointments at 4:45pm and 6pm…sounds perfect! I then asked for manicure and pedicure appointments for before or after our massages and he offered them before… excellent. Then I said, I am going to check with my family and call you back, and he ended with, “just so you know they will book up fast.” To me that was kind of a turnoff, great that they are super busy, and kiddos to that, but I kind of felt like they were to busy for me or only thought of me as money.

So I made one final call to Allyu Spa “the art of healing” located at 600 W. Chicago Ave. http://www.allyuspa.com/ and the lady on the phone was so nice. She gave me all of my options 40min., 60min., and 90min. massages. She provided me with what times they had open for three massage appointments at the same time. She also gave me my options for additional services, spa manicures and a mini-spa facial for my husband. I told her I would call her back so I could check with my family and she said, "ok." I called back and got another nice lady on the phone and went ahead and picked Allyu Spa! From their website and looking at the photos, it looks very impressive and I am so excited to check it out. I will be sure to write a review after I am done with my massage and spa manicure!

Thank goodness for Allyu Spa, I hope it’s an amazing spa day experience for us.

I also introduced myself to a group of beautiful fashionistas last night and one of them was, Kim Hiley owner of Tribeca a Chicago Boutique located at 1035 W. Madison Street. I will be sure to check her place out this weekend...I boutiques and I love to shop!

Now after a fabulous night, of networking, browsing at fashions by Kathryn McKechnie, and bidding on the fabulous auction items, which I hope I won the 1 night stay at Hotel Sax and dinner for two a Sunda, we made our final stop at A-Mano Italian Trattoria http://www.amanochicago.com/ we sat on the patio, enjoyed a glass of wine, had great conversation and ate some delicious Italian cuisine. One other thing to note about A-Mano is that they have the best Gelato and Sorbetto in the city! Also, if you haven't been to Bin 36 it's a fabulous wine and cheese bar.

The Real Housewives of Chicago....could it be?

Many of you have heard the buzz over the past few weeks about Towers Productions being in Chicago and looking to find the next group of fabulous Chicago socialites to shoot a local version of The Real Housewives of New York.

I know I personally found out about it through Candace Jordan's blog and facebook updates on her audition. After reading the news article I decided that I had a fabulous friend who I wanted to nominate for this show. Jenny Sepulveda who I not only have the pleasure to work with and serve on her board of directors for Helping Hands Forever but I also consider her a friend. Now, if you know me and know her we are in completely different stages in our lives yet for some reason, it's as if I have known her for years.

After reading what Becky Cattie the casting director for this new show wrote about what they were searching for I knew Jenny was going to be perfect. She said, “the hope is to find women who could give this formula a new twist, showcasing a really unique group to represent the Midwest.” The production team is seeking “a dynamic group of ladies leading extraordinary lives—modern housewives who juggle busy lives and look great doing it! No wallflowers please.”

So with this said, about a week ago I decided to go behind Jenny’s back and nominate her with a letter I sent off to the casting agent at Tower Productions. I text and emailed Jenny right away telling her what I was up to and she was so touched and excited to hear the news. It literally took 20 minutes for them to contact her to have her audition for this show. She was so excited and I couldn’t believe!

A week had past and Jenny and I recently meet up at the Latina Style Business Series at Macy’s State Street this past Thursday and she told me that she did her phone interview and that they wanted to interview her in person. Now this was not the biggest news that she told me about, she then preceded to tell me that they wanted her to pick some of her girlfriends to audition with her. Well guess what she picked me! I can’t thank her enough for this opportunity. I wrote up a bio and emailed over some photos to Jenny and she submitted my information to them. She got an email back from Becky and she said, "Thanks so much Jenny. Marti sounds amazing!" So this evening we are going to get our lovely group of ladies together and meet up to chat about our Thursday audition with Becky.

It’s truly amazing what life can bring you. I have always said everything happens for a reason. I don’t consider myself a diva or a fashionista I am so just me…I am young, successful, independent and fabulous! If they are looking for a dynamic and diverse group of ladies I know they will pick us but in the end of the day no matter what happens this will be an amazing experience for all of us.

Nisar Naimi is the Senior Event Coordinator for Sabrina Hans Events and two words, wonderful and a blessing! Well that's more than two words but you get it. He's been there ever step of the way, he has kept us organized, scheduled our meetings, attended all the meetings with us, given us great advice, I mean he's been to probably hundreds if not thousands of weddings who better to ask for an opinion or help with a decision.

These two are unstoppable! I asked Sabrina I think the first day a met her on how she gets her clients and she said, "word of mouth". So that is what I am doing, I know that I am an extremely happy client/bride and I not only think of Sabrina and Nisar as the best wedding planners EVER but most importantly as wonderful friends. They will ease your stress and help you and your fiance enjoy the wedding process. They will take care of all the "little" details that kind of sneak up on you during the last month and will ensure that you have nothing to worry about on the day of your wedding!

Then I urge you to venture into Aniko Salon and Spa in the South Loop. I had the distinct pleasure of spending a few hours with their employees yesterday and it really was a refreshing treat.

The ambiance: The space is meant to feel homey and relaxing while still being luxurious. The women's dressing rooms come complete with personal lockers, a blow dry station for hair touch-ups after services and showers (which are exceedingly hard to remove yourself from). It's small without being claustrophobic. The relaxation/waiting area is a wonderful space in which to lose yourself for a few moments. It's well-designed to help you center and leave behind the stresses of the city before your service. Water or tea are at your command.

The services: I received an Herbology Body Retexturizer, a massage and a shampoo and blow dry (at the adjoining salon).

1. Herbology Body Retexturizer

The service was administered by Billy--an esthetician who certainly knows her stuff. There's little she can't do--from nails to waxing to facials-- and even does the daring "manzillion" (which I've chosen to call the brozillian). She is an absolute delight whose refreshing energy can't help but lift your spirits. She began by dry brushing my skin, which felt fabulous. She then polished my skin with herbs and oils and wrapped me in a heated blanket. It's a bit like being in a cocoon of heated wrestling mats, but it feels absolutely amazing. While you're relaxing in the warmth you are treated to a mini facial. Billy is one honest esthetician--she'll tell you if your skin needs work, but only because in the end you'll be happier.

The result: Divine, buttery skin with a hint of shine. I couldn't stop touching my shoulders. It's almost like she sloughed off the whole dark, dreary winter of dry skin.

2. Massage

Being a health and beauty writer I've had my fair share of massages. I've had stone massages and aromatherapy massages and massages done by feet--but I've never drifted off into a glorious near-sleep state of day dreaming like I did here. Tattenai is a massage genius--combining the perfect amount of relaxation and bodywork so you feel rejuvenated but at peace. As a reporter I tend to have the bad habit of talking through massages, asking this question and that, but I was so relaxed here I couldn't move my jaw.

3. Wash and Blow dry

What can I say? I'll put it plainly. I've never had a better style than I did here. Stephanie, who spent the last few years honing her skills in New York, whipped my hair into shape so quickly I didn't even know what happened. And I looked like I had the kind of hair you see in commercials. It bounced, it moved, it shone like the sun. Please let her blow out your hair.

Final thoughts: If you're sick of salons and spas that don't know or care to know your name, rush you through your service, and could care less if they see you again then give Aniko a call. They also care about your bottom line--they frequently run specials and offer a pretty awesome referral incentive.

Ellen explained that after speaking with Martha Stewart, who happened to be “twittering” about her and after Sean "Diddy" Combs introduced Ellen to twittering on Monday, she couldn't stop sending tweets!

If Ellen is into “twittering” then maybe it is cool! I had signed up a few weeks ago but never really understood what it was all about but now after hearing Ellen rave about it I am posting my own “twits” about Aniko Salon and Spa and within a few minutes I had my own followers.

Aniko’s Picks and our "hidden gem" - Aniko Salon and Spa

Today we came across a “hidden gem” and we wanted to share a few of our Aniko Picks with you!

Our first stop is Elements of Style Boutique “aka our hidden gem” located across the street from Aniko Salon and Spa at 1130 S. Wabash Avenue. It literally just opened about a week ago and is owned by Julie who is absolutely wonderful to work with. It felt like I had my own personal shopper who knew my sizes and truthfully told me as to if the clothes looked good on me or not. And to actually find a boutique that has more than just runway model sizes i.e., 0 and -0 was priceless! She has everything from designer purses, cute tops, jewelry, dresses, and an amazing jean collection.

Not only did I purchase some cute tops and an adorable dress but, honestly the best purchase of all was my new Fidelity Denim jeans. It was love at first site, especially for a girl who can never find jeans that fit me in all the right places just perfectly. I know I am not alone here ladies, how many of you get so excited and jump up and down, when you find a pair of jeans that flatter your back side just right? It’s a fact ladies there isn’t a lot out there but these are truly one of a kind. In fact Kate Hudson swears by them! The "Birth of Peeky"

It was a rainy, bone-chilling October evening in New York City. In her 5th floor walk-up apartment, Peeky Toes Founder Charissa Stuart was dreaming about a pedicure and warm feet as she put away her laundry. She was unemployed and living in a 350 square foot studio.

Yet, as much as she yearned for that pedicure, she was dissuaded by the daunting vision of herself trekking down 5 flights and walking to and from the nail salon in flip-flops with exposed feet in wet, 40-degree weather. Her only other option was to put on closed-toe shoes, but she knew this would mean she'd have to face the age-old dilemma of ruining her polish.

Looking deep within herself (and her sock drawer), Charissa found a solution. She pulled out an old, holey pair of sweat socks circa 1988. Determined, she cut off the toe sections of the socks, slipped her new toe-less socks onto her feet, and put on a trusted pair of flip-flops. With her toes wiggling proudly as her feet felt snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug, Charissa envisioned herself (and all of womankind!) braving the elements of a cold October night while triumphantly walking to the nail salon.

That night, Peeky Toes was born.

Lately we've been hearing the media alert us to Congress and executives who are spending thousands of dollars on spa vacations and treatments while our nation is in a serious recession. Spa treatments are branded with the new dirty word...luxury. And while our tax dollars should not be putting them up in 5-star destination spa resorts, I am glad that the people with the weight of fixing our troubled financial system are taking time to de-stress. It should just come out of their own wallet the same as any stressed-out public servant such as police officers and public school teachers.

Spa treatments, especially massage is an important part of keeping a clear head and a healthy body. Massage helps ailments such as depression, osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, migraines, anxiety, MS, and scoliosis. According to the Touch Research Institute of Miami massage facilitates weight gain in pre-term infants, enhances attentiveness, alleviates depressive symptoms, reduces pain, reduces stress hormones, and improves immune function. If these effects were listed on a bottle, would you buy it?

In your life how many cars will you own? 1? 2? 5? You may have spent anywhere from $12,000 to $90,000, or even more, on your car. How do you care for it? Ear candling, also called ear coning or thermal-auricular therapy, is an alternative medicine practice claimed to improve general health and well being by lighting one end of a hollow candle and placing the other end in the ear canal. – From Wikipedia

We have been offering ear candling for about a year now and I have always been reluctant to try this service because I had no previous knowledge of what the service actually included. I kind of was under the impression that this service would hurt and couldn’t really fathom a candle burning next to my ear.

Anyways, to my surprise I really enjoyed the treatment! There was no pain, no burning next to my ear, just a light crackling noise and instant gratification seeing all the toxins, built up wax and junk come out of my ears. During the service you also receive a light massage around the ear, neck and back of head to release the toxins and circulate the build up towards the candle. It does sound nasty but it feels so good knowing that all that build up and “gunk” is out of my ears.

My esthetician Billy Luckett, explained to me that in the past she has been dirt, sand and even bugs come out of people’s ears. Last night, we decided to check out our first “Bridal Event” in the city and truly enjoyed ourselves. My fear was that it would be one of those big wedding expos and to overwhelming and packed with tons of vendors fighting for your money, to book your venue, to book your honeymoon…but surprisingly it was refreshing.

I went for my first bridal consultation yesterday with Patrick Daniels and yes at my own salon in the city but seriously I had such an amazing experience. First of all, it was one of the first times that I received a service at my own place were I didn’t feel like I was at work and secondly, I really felt like a princess when I left. Patrick began the consultation discussing the details of my wedding, the timing, the dress, etc. And then explained that he would need to try out a few products on my hair to see how my hair would react, how well it would hold a curl and if the product would flake in my hair. I know that sounds gross but it’s very important not to use the wrong product on your wedding day because your hair might look dull, dry and flaky and really could become a disaster for any bride.

Patrick explained that he prefers when brides do not bring in tons of photos of what they want the day of their bridal consultation rather he let’s them email him photos a week or so before so he can begin to concept ideas and then the day of your bridal consultation he can work his magic!

In my case, I am wearing two dresses so I wanted two looks in one day with limited time. Patrick began with a half up, half down look, which was absolutely gorgeous! I feel in love. He took photos so I could look back and reference what I liked about the look and also, taught me how to stand in my wedding dress while I was taking photos. That was a plus! Who knew a simple stance can truly make all the difference in how your wedding photos turn out. He also, provided me with tips on my shoe choices. I hadn’t even thought about that part yet but I will be sure to get out within the next few weeks and take care of that.

Now moving on to the next look, a sexy, sophisticated yet playful updo…so me! Once again, I had nothing really to say but wow! It was stunning and so elegant. After those more playful looks he opted to show me something more runway, avant garde and asymmetrical. It was nothing that I would have personally envisioned myself in but it was beautiful. I certainly liked aspects of this look and wouldn’t mind tailoring it. Last but not least the traditional tailored look pretty but not me and Patrick agreed. He told me that he basis his vision on how the bride reacts and apparently I didn’t react to this look.

So ladies, that was it, how can you go wrong? Three looks, a relaxed environment, an amazing consultation, lessons on my hair, how to stand for photos, what shoes to wear and I left with a big smile on my face and feeling so at ease with how my wedding day will go! Priceless.

Last night Aniko Salon and Spa team attended the Angels and Cupids party hosted by Flirty Girl Fitness™ benefitting the Imerman Angels, “One-on-One cancer support: connecting cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers”.

We mingled with beautiful angels & cupids and enjoyed complimentary Nuvo and Hors D'oeuvres compliments of Karyn's (http://www.karynraw.com/). We watched an amazing pole performance by the Flirty Girl Angels, choreographed to the Charlie’s Angels theme song of course. Naledi Sesinyi Flirty Girl Fitness™ Instructor

After the performance, in the ladies locker room, we got the opportunity to met Naledi, who is one of the sweetest instructors at Flirty Girl Fitness™. Naledi teaches a variety of classes such as, chair striptease, video vixen, pole dancing, lap dance, and booty beat. Naledi who had never been on a pole who and explained to us that she had vertigo fear and a fear of heights, shelf taught her first pole dance class when her fellow Flirty Girl instructor said to her, “I can’t teach my class today…it's yours have fun!” Naledi said she caught on quickly and with her non-desire to actually workout this was an excellent solution to keeping her body toned and tight. I am serious she must have the tightest abs I have ever seen.

After learning about Naledi’s inspiring story I am intrigued to give pole dancing a try. Her next pole dance class is today, Friday February 13, 2009 at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm and is held every other Friday at the times listed. It was a pleasure to have meet Naledi and I hope you all try one of her amazing classes.

Flirty Girl Fitness™ is the brainchild of sisters Kerry and Krista Knee, who quickly became known as "The Flirty Girls". Kerry and Krista were born in Newfoundland, Canada but spent most of their upbringing in Halifax, Nova Scotia before moving to Toronto, where they started Flirty Girl Fitness™. Krista still resides in Toronto and Kerry resides in Chicago.

Kerry, an MBA graduate from Concordia University in Montreal, has 12 years of experience working with business start-ups, focusing on marketing, business development and product development for both large and small companies. Kerry's specialty is taking industry-first products to market. Her work includes partnerships with such Fortune 500 companies as HP, Microsoft, Pfizer, Merck and Sanofi-Aventis.

Krista, an avid fitness buff and dance enthusiast, is a graduate of Dalhousie University in Halifax. After graduating from university Krista took a position as a sales manager with a major national communications company where she accumulated eight years of business experience and developed strong technology skills. Working within the provincial education sector, Krista worked closely with the universities and school boards to strategically develop and build their internet and communications networks.

The sisters' move into fitness began in 2005 after Kerry watched an episode of “Oprah” with “Desperate Housewives'” Teri Hatcher demonstrating a sexy workout class she'd taken in LA. Kerry, who had always been into personal fitness, was dying to try it but couldn't find any classes available outside of California. Seeing the opportunity, she bought a pole to teach herself. When Krista came to visit her sister they were both amazed how quickly she took to this new sport; within weeks Krista was mastering the spins and techniques involved in pole dancing. With Kerry's experience in taking new start-ups to market and her sister's physical fitness background and prowess on the pole this dynamic duo developed and launched Flirty Girl Fitness™.

The original Flirty Girl Fitness™ is now one of the top fitness facilities for women in Toronto since opening in December 2005. Flirty Girl Fitness™ keeps growing and now has a staff of 22 people in Toronto, servicing thousands of women from all over Canada who are enjoying this unique style of fitness. I recently experienced this trend in our salon when my best friend and Maid of Honor opted for a new look…adding bangs! Yes, that’s right they are back and can make any length hair, curly or straight look sexy and sophisticated. Fringe hairstyles with side swept fringes or choppy fringes and asymmetrical or angular cuts in curly hair will compliment your long or short hairstyles perfectly. She might kill me for posting this photo but not just celebrities can sport this gorgeous look.

For the past few months I have been working on growing my shorter layered hairstyle from 2008 to long luscious locks for my wedding in 2009. After becoming educated by my Redken stylist, Stephanie Barnes, I have some helpful hints that I have learned to help you grow your hair and achieve sexy, healthy and shiny long locks!

1. Do not flat iron your hair everyday.
2. Do not wash your hair everyday. Get a fabulous blowout from one of our Aniko stylists and wake up the next morning with gorgeous hair for two days!
3. Do not use conditioner all the way to your roots. Keep it towards the end of your hair.
4. If you do not have to blow-dry your hair everyday don’t let it air dry.
5. This is a MUST…make sure you receive a haircut every six weeks on the dot. If you go past this time you are allowing your ends to break which means you will have to get more cut off.
6. Get a Redken Conditioning Chemistry Treatment every month! And at home use a deep conditioning treatment once per week or every other week depending on your hair.
7. Limit the amount of products you use in your hair. Pick your top 3 and stick to that. I would suggest for your shampoo and conditioner Redken All Soft, for shine and to blow dry your hair faster Moroccanoil designed for all hair types, to add shine Redken Vinyl Glam 02, and for finishing Redken Workforce 09.

From one soon-to-be bride to another soon-to-be bride I have some advice for you on how you can have your dream wedding without breaking the bank.

I always new I wanted to have an elaborate wedding, that showcased my fiancé and my personalities, with gorgeous flowers, a stunning wedding gown, great music, dancing all night long, excellent food, and cupcakes!

My wedding gown experience as described in my interview with Wendy Donahue from the Chicago Tribune was not exactly what I expected. To be honest the first place I visited was so sterile I thought she might attack me if I did something wrong or stepped on the dress. From one artist to another I understand that your own designs and creations are precious but seriously how can you not allow for a bride to not take a photo of the dress, especially when her mother was in India at the time. So with that said and not to go into all the gory details, trying to run my business, and plan a wedding I really did not need any extra stress.

Enters, our next stop, “the over the top, pushy cheerleader.” Seriously, I think I may have tried on one dress that had the “wow factor” but beyond that my bridesmaids, maid of honor and both of the mothers almost peed their pants with laughter at how hideous some of the dresses she picked out for me were. No matter how much I love Sarah Jessica Parker and Sex and the City and their elaborate over the top fashion trends. I kind of felt like she was trying to put me in one of those bridal magazines were brides-to-be say, “why would I ever want a humongous bow on my chest and bird in my hair for my special day?” Literally have you seen some of these bridal magazines….gorgeous yes….but practical not so much. Now it may seem that I am not in this wedding planning experience but no that is not the case…it’s been an amazing experience for me…and even with these minor hiccups I wouldn’t have changed it for one second.

Now here comes the best part, stop number three aka “Heaven”. As I walked down the stairs to this white paradise I couldn’t help but get butterflies in my stomach. I also have to comment on Sahil (http://www.sahil.com/) if you are Indian or marrying and Indian in my case this is the place to go ladies! You might have a little sticker shock when you see the prices but the prices are negotiable and the owners and their son are so wonderful to work with.

Wedding décor is next and this was a toss-up for me. It was one of the wedding items on my checklist that I did have a budget for but I also, wanted to make sure our guests had the “wow factor” when they walked into the room. My choices are Kehoe Designs and Yanni Design Studio. Both places produce amazing, one of kind designs for weddings but the difference is…the price point. Now I am not one to be cheap but I do know how to close a deal and get what I want for a better value. So I will leave it up to you on this one and not tell you whom I went with.

One other budget conscious option would be Sweet Petal (http://www.sweetpetalchicago.com/). Melisa the owner is so sweet...maybe that's why she called it Sweet Petal? Anyways, she has worked a few of our events in the past and knows how to work within your budget without compromising your design.

I cannot praise Aniko enough!

I recently got married and was incredibly worried about the hair and makeup aspect. I called a couple different salons and was never able to talk to anyone. I called Aniko and they gave me to Patrick right away. Ladies, if you are getting married, and need someone to make you feel like the most beautiful person on earth, call Patrick. He immediately put me at ease about the whole process and gave me the confidence to just let him work his magic.

At Patrick's recommendation, I went in for a pre-wedding trial haircut. I have very long hair that has not had any treatments. I didn't want to do anything drastic so he just trimmed it up a little. He maybe cut of an inch, but they way he did it was noticeable...even my fiancé noticed, something very rare.

Then, for my wedding trial, he spent maybe 2 hours on my hair alone. I gave him a vague idea of what I wanted and he created something even better. My mom had a trial done by someone else and didn't love it. Patrick re-did and she felt like a million dollars.

For my actual wedding, I had my entire bridal party go in for manicures, pedicures, hair, and makeup. My fiancé and grandmother also went in for haircuts. Everyone walked out feeling beautiful. The entire salon staff gave us the best customer service and made us feel completely at home. We had a very large, fairly rambunctious group and they showed us an incredible amount of patience. We arrived to a fresh fruit plate and mimosas and left with a champagne toast from the salon!

Patrick and the staff at Aniko helped make everyone involved in my wedding feel beautiful, which is all I really wanted. I also felt like the most beautiful bride. I got so many compliments on my hair and makeup, I couldn't believe it. I thought their prices were incredibly reasonable when it came to wedding services. They charged about $50 less than anywhere else I found. I could not be more satisfied with my experience at Aniko!

Last but not least, the cupcakes! Of course, I wanted a gorgeous cake but most importantly my fiancé and I wanted cupcakes. Sugar Bliss Cake Boutique, owned by Teresa Ging is, “delightfully delicious” I cannot praise her enough. Don't break the bank for a dream gown

After visiting two boutiquey bridal salons in Chicago, Marti Fernandez knew the chemistry just wasn't there.

"They were so sterile and unwelcoming," said the 26-year-old spa owner, whose wedding is July 11. "One wouldn't let me take pictures of [a gown], and how am I supposed to order it if my mom can't see it? I asked myself, Why am I putting myself through this? It's not that fabulous!"

Other brides are drawing a similar "I'm just not that into you" conclusion as they shop for gowns in an era when not just cash, but also time, is precious. They want to do away with the epic, angst-filled order-and-wait tradition.

"I'm the bride who wants to do it in one day and get it done," Fernandez said.

Which brings us to her third stop: White Chicago, an upscale, gallery-like consignment shop in River North (222 W. Huron St., 312-397-1571, whitechicago.com) that sells new, sample and once-wed designer gowns for a fraction of the retail price. For her Indian/American wedding—her fiancé is Indian—she found a designer gown there for "less than half the price I expected it to be." She will change into it after her ceremony, for which she is wearing a maroon lehenga. Her gown budget was $5,000. "I got both for under $3,000."

Whatever the budget, wise brides can whittle the white-gown process into a cheaper, faster one—and still get a dress of their dreams. Here are five fresh ways to do so.

1. Buy secondhand, online. In April, White Chicago is adding Web sales with whitexchange.com, upholding the same premium standards for consignment gowns that the store has. (The gown must be more than $1,500 retail, less than 3 years old and have its designer labels intact.) "We're going to be super strict, so brides aren't sorting through thousands of dresses," said Ursula Guyer, who owns the store with Stacy Senechalle.

"When Stacy and I concepted the store three years ago, we thought you really needed to come in and experience the store and see the gowns. We still think that's very important. But people are buying them online and we wanted to give people that option."

Also, because space is limited in their shop, they're adding a basic listing service online. Listing a gown (which must adhere to White Chicago's standards) costs $50 annually. That online service is also available for bridesmaid and mother-of-the-bride dresses ($20 a year). The sellers keep 100 percent of the proceeds "but they do all the work," Guyer points out.

Beyond eBay, another online source for gowns is the wittily named I Do Now I Don't (idonowidont.com), hatched out of one guy's broken engagement. Mainly a source of luxury engagement rings sold auction-style, it also carries some dresses.

"Secondhand has become the latest trend," said Mara Opperman, sister to the ex-engaged guy, Joshua Opperman of New York (who is now married to someone else). She says that in the past few months, sales volume and listings on idonowidont.com have been increasing daily.

2. Drop the word "wedding" from your shopping vocabulary. As Michelle Obama proved on inauguration night and Eva Mendes did at the Golden Globes, the line between bridal and evening gowns is blurring.

"Type 'long white dress' on Google, because once you call it a wedding dress, the price goes really high," said Andrea Linett, creative director for Lucky magazine. "People didn't used to make evening dresses that are white; now they're all over the place."

So check out sites like edressme.com or promdressshop.com. Dare to enter the prom dress sections at department stores. Peruse the bridesmaid dresses at department stores or specialty shops like David's Bridal and ask if they come in an ivory color. For her island wedding, Stacey Roney of Chicago, who runs beautyoncall.com, found a dress that was sold both as a wedding gown ($1,200) and as a bridesmaid dress ($250), from the same company, at the former Marshall Field's. She bought the bridesmaid version in cream.

3. Shop sample sales. With many of its bridal salons closing, including Chicago's, Saks Fifth Avenue is hosting bridal sample sales now through February across the country, including at the 700 N. Michigan Ave. store, with up to 50 percent off gowns from designers including Vera Wang, Reem Acra and more. (Tip: Open a Saks account when you purchase a gown to save an additional 10 percent.)

From Feb. 24 through March 1, Macy's State Street store is hosting its semiannual bridal gown sample sale, with up to 75 percent off sample gowns and accessories from Lazaro, Anne Barge, Romona Keveza and more. Appointments are suggested; call 312-781-3545.

The next legendary Running of the Brides sample sale won't be until July 24 in Chicago at the Filene's Basement on State Street. (But there's one in New York Feb. 27.) Check filenesbasement.com/ bridal.

4. Go vintage and restyle. Take another look at Mom's or Grandma's gown and consider the possibilities for restyling (e.g. removing sleeves, changing necklines, adding a sash or straps, etc). At Minx Parlor, a European shoe boutique (750 N. Franklin St., 312-643-5333, minxparlor.com), owner and designer Jenni Bird recently launched a service that helps brides-to-be restyle vintage couture pieces at a budget-friendly price.

5. Buy non-designer. By now, most people are familiar with J.Crew's bridal gowns—not inexpensive but they will spare a bride some of the pomp of shopping at a bridal salon. Isaac Mizrahi for Target also has a few white gowns online and on sale now—the most expensive one was $79.99 at last check. And the David's Bridal chain (davidsbridal.com) is the refuge of many a bride on a budget.
